The Wanapitei Chateau

JOIN US FOR A PROFOUNDLY CANADIAN EXPERIENCE

Whether you are looking for a chance to escape for a few days or you are heading to Wanapitei to collect the kids from camp, why not consider our eco-lodge for an opportunity to reconnect with the land in spectacular Temagami? Hike through the majestic pine forest, along a beaver meadow and to the scenic look-outs of the Ferguson Trail. Paddle up the Red Squirrel River while the sun pierces through the cool mist of dawn. Grab a packed lunch and head out for a day-long excursion or maybe just stroll the beach, take a swim in crystal clear water and then forest bathe in a hammock with a book from our boutique northern library.

Nestled into the forest across a footbridge from Camp Wanapitei, Canada’s Premier Canoe Tripping Camp, the majestic two-storey log Chateau offers unique nature-based experiences. Whether you are looking for a weekend get-away or a take-off spot for an extended canoe trip through n’Daki Menan, the unceded homeland of the Teme-Augama Anishnaibai and Temagami First Nation. Our cozy accommodations and delicious earth-friendly meals will make your stay unique and memorable.

Immersed in Nature

The Wanapitei Chateau is ideally situated on the shore of Kaw-wawm inashing, Sandy Inlet, at the north end of Lake Temagami. Accessed by a 1.5 km trail, water or float plane, it is both reasonably accessible and beautifully remote. Fall asleep to the call of the loon and waves lapping on the beach. Wake to the gentle rustle of trembling aspen and the familiar song of the white-throated sparrow. The day is yours but the rhythm will emerge from the world around you.

Rustic Charm

Life at the Chateau revolves around the celebrated lounge-dining area and covered front porch. The atmosphere is casual and tales from the day, as well as other adventures, flow freely. This designated heritage structure was cut from the forest and erected for the summer of 1933 by the Maki family who had landed at Kaw-wawm inashing three years earlier, fresh from Finland, to start construction on a relocated Camp Wanapitei. The lodge has a second lounge on the upper floor as well as ten flanking bedrooms, one of which houses our library. Our standard bedrooms are set up with a double and single bed, with one having two twin beds, and there are two larger family rooms with four single beds each. All bedrooms open to spacious covered balconies with spectacular views of the lake or river. Bathrooms as well as the shower room are shared. The Chateau also offers a limited number of tent sites.

Memorable Meals

Being immersed in nature and fresh air is sure to spark your appetite, and the Chateau kitchen rises to the occasion with three healthy, home-cooked meals daily, complemented by delicious baked goods and desserts.  Our kitchen is excited to incorporate seasonal and locally-produced food. We can also happily accommodate most dietary restrictions and preferences, given advance notice.  Meals are served buffet-style in our warm and relaxed dining room, and you are always welcome to eat on our expansive front porch, taking in views of the lake. Heading out for a paddle or hike after your hot breakfast?  The kitchen will pack a picnic lunch, with options that change daily.

** Please note that the Chateau is not licensed to sell or serve alcohol.

Experience n’Daki Menan from our Doorstep

As guests on this pristine and magnificent land, we acknowledge the inherent stewardship relationship between the Tema-Augama Anishnabai and n’Daki Menan, gifted by the creator and nurtured through 6,000-7,000 years of continuous habitation. We honour the tradition of Kaw-wawm inashing as a gathering place and of the Nastawagan – trails and waterways – as living, functioning artifacts that continue to provide access throughout n’Daki Menan and beyond.

A stay at the Wanapitei Chateau places you deep into this rugged, storied landscape. Explore it locally by foot through our trail system or by water in one of our canoes or kayaks. And don’t forget to ask our knowledgeable staff for advice. Temagami is also a world-renowned destination for extended canoe adventures and there is no better place to start and/or finish than the Wanapitei Chateau – enjoy a great meal, relax in the sauna or, perhaps, explore different ways of understanding Turtle Island through a book from the library.

Community Weekend – July 25th – July 27th, 2025

This mid-summer gathering, filled with music, stories and shared nature-based adventure, embodies the spirit of the Wanapitei Chateau. Consider joining us for a chance to connect with friends, old and new, while immersed in the regenerative splendour of Kaw-wawm inashing. Friday evening will kick-off with our renowned fish-fry, followed by music and readings in the Chateau lounge that may spill out to a campfire on the point. Saturday morning is a good time to explore the trails, out on the lake, or perhaps a jaunt to the falls. But then, the moment could also call for another cup of coffee, a stroll on the beach and a swim.

On Saturday afternoon we will be offering another opportunity to participate in a conversation about co-existence within n’Daki Menan, facilitated by some of our good friends from the Teme-agama Anishnabai / Temagami First Nation (see link at bottom of the page for a summary of last year’s discussion). This will be followed by a BBQ on the camp side of the bridge and a grand old Wanapitei square dance! Sunday morning will be a relaxing affair with the possibility for a sunrise paddle.

Like a little more time to explore on your own? Register for Sunday lunch or another night!
