Wanapitei Leaders in Training
Four-week session designed to learn and develop skills needed to be a wilderness trip leader for 17 year olds.
Developing young wilderness leaders.
Over the course of the month, campers will learn the skills needed to plan and guide canoe trips, as well as develop their own personal leadership style. While in-camp, WLITs will participate in a Wilderness first aid course, learn conflict resolution and other interpersonal skills, and help plan and deliver in-camp programs such as regatta and campfire through placements with younger campers.
The July WLIT program includes heading to the Temagami First Nation Pow Wow in Shining Wood Bay and an opportunity to meet elders and learn about Bear Island and the amazing people that live there.
This wouldn’t be Wanapitei without some canoe tripping, and WLITs are no exception. Campers will go on three separate trips over the month, starting with a 6 day whitewater clinic on the Dumoine River. This trip won’t cover much distance, which allows much more time to play and practice at each rapid. Campers will also get a chance to hop in the solo boats!
Next, campers will go on a 3 day solo experience. With their leaders’ guidance, they will plan the route, pack their food, and set out by themselves for a unique experience on Lake Temagami. Leaders will oversee all aspects of their trip and can always be contacted if needed.
Finally, the group will head out on a 5 day flatwater trip in the Lake Temagami area. Here, campers can put their skills to the test by taking turns as Leaders of the Day. This trip also includes a visit with Temagami First Nation Elder Alex Mathias, a guided hike through Misabi territory and the Old Growth Forest.
Once back in camp, WLITs will help with the end of session festivities.
Some outdoor and canoe tripping experience required.
