In our new feature Just Checking In, we talk with our staff from this past season to see what they’re up to in the off-season.  Our first check-in is with Morgan Moores.

Since VII, I have been preparing like a mad man for the next step in my life and enjoying a little time off in between jobs.  I researched cities and jobs in China, applied for several dozen and spent the better part of three weeks comparing schools and interviewing to finally land on a private English training school that I will be working for these next 12 months.

It is located in Weihai (Shangdong province), which is across from South Korea on the south-eastern shore of China’s Bohai Sea.  The temperature fluctuates from an average high of 2C in January to 27C in August and stays mild all year because of the coastal influence.  I will be living with my girlfriend and we will be in an apartment that is a ten-minute walk from the ocean and the same from some small nearby mountains.  I will be focusing on teaching English to students of all ages in small class sizes and will have ample time to explore Chinese culture, learn Mandarin and sing Karaoke.

Other than the challenges and adventures that will come with being immersed in a new culture and starting a challenging job I plan on studying martial arts, drinking green tea, focusing on Mandarin study, cycling around the coast and looking for opportunities in the Outdoor Education field.  An ideal situation would lead to a future in which I am able to lead outdoor educational expeditions to a variety of people from different cultures and spread an ideal of compassion for each other and our earth.

-Morgan led our Voyageur II Group A this past summer with Holly Nesbitt.  He has been a longtime camper and staff member at Wanapitei.  We are excited to hear what adventures his next year brings.
