Just Checking In: Jean Murray
Oh, hi, Jean! Just thought we’d check in. Where are you right now?
Montréal, Quebec
What you are doing in Montreal?
I’m in my 4th year at McGill University, studying Cognitive Science and Philosophy.
What you are looking forward to this coming summer?
I’m always excited to return to camp every summer, and I know I’m not the only one! I love the days when everyone arrives at camp: watching the smiles break out, the old friends reconnect, and the new friendships form. I also can’t wait to take a break from city life to chill out, run some sweet sets, and get to see the stars again – something I don’t get here in Montreal! And I’m looking forward to lots of morning paddling in August; watching the mist rise off the river and enjoying the stillness and silence before the day really gets going.
How camp has played an important role in your life?
I’ve been coming to Wanapitei since I was seven years old, so I can’t imagine summer without it! But most importantly, having lived away from home for a while now and done lots of traveling by myself, I’m always grateful for the confidence that camp gave me, as well as resourcefulness. When you’ve had to make a tent pole out of sticks from the forest, all of a sudden taking midterms, navigating airport customs, or fixing leaky taps in your apartment doesn’t seem so hard! Also, learning how to cook over a fire for 14 hungry people makes cooking on a stove for roommates a breeze!
Jean is returning for her fourth year on staff this summer.
