Liam Liam Agnew

From Vancouver, British Columbia. Liam graduated in 2017 from the Outdoor Recreation Management program at Capilano University in BC, and just got back from three months travelling in New Zealand. His favourite activities include cooking, reading, and playing board games. Great Moment in Camping: “Hiking for two months on the Te Araroa Trail, covering the 1307.7km length of New Zealand’s South Island.” Liam will be leading trips and working on site this summer.  This is his thirteenth year at camp and fourth year on staff.

Minka Bodzsár

From Szeged, Hungary. Minka just finished her university studies and is now an English and German language teacher. In her free time, she loves hanging out with cats and friends. Travelling, arts and cooking are some of Minka’s favourite things. Great Moment from Camp: “Singing songs on top volume from the musical Hamilton with the kitchen folk while getting ready for the banquet. There is no camp kitchen without Hamilton.” This will be Minka’s 3rd summer at Wanapitei.

From Toronto, Ontario. Grant is working at the downtown Mountain Equipment Co-op in Toronto. He was a drummer in a steel pan band that participated in festivals in Australia, Scotland and Italy. Great Moment in Camping: “One of my favorite camping memories was day 12 on VI. We had just completed the hardest 12 days of tripping I’ve ever had through various “creeks”, log jams, and a swamp. Then at the end of the “Creek That Shall Not Be Named” the sun came out we got to really paddle for the first time in almost two weeks and the feeling of accomplishment, even halfway through trip, was awesome!” This is his 12th year at camp and his sixth year on staff.

Connor Cepella

Connor Cepella

From Ottawa, Ontario. Connor recently completed a Masters degree in resource and environmental management at Dalhousie University in Halifax. Connor loves to paddle with family and friends, which he has been doing for as long as he can remember. Great Moment in Camping: “Reaching the Pontax River last summer on VI.”  Connor will be leading VII this summer. This will be his 15th year at camp and his 7th year on staff.

Em Clarke

From Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina.  Em studied Art Fundamentals at Seneca at York University.  Her favourite activities include volunteering at GaLs Tabletop Gaming helping LBGTQ+ youth develop interpersonal relationships through gaming.  Great Moment in Camping: “Sunset on the Barrens near the end of my VII, which was special neither in its redness or its lateness, but in the warm firelight glow it painted the best friends I’ve ever had.” Em will be working in our kitchen this summer.  This is her 9th summer at Wanapitei and 5th year on staff.

 

Jordan Decker

From Toronto, Ontario. Jordan is currently studying Kinesiology and Environment & Health at Western University in Ontario. Her interests include playing hockey (go red wings!), dogs, spending times with loved ones, and adventuring. Great Moment in Camping: “On VII my leader Helen kept a cold bag of tapioca in her pocket for 2 days just so she could eat it in front of me, was pretty great”. Jordan will be leading trips and working on site this summer. This will be her seventh year at camp and her first year on staff.

From Kitchener, Ontario.  Perry is studying Commerce at Carleton University in Ottawa. Great Moment in Camping: “It would have to be on my VII when for the first five or six weeks of the trip it was always daylight because of how far north the trip was.” Perry will be leading trips and working on site this summer. This is his fifth year at Wanapitei and his second year on staff.

 

LizLiz Evans

From Calgary, Alberta. Liz completed a degree in Environmental Engineering at Western University in Ontario and spent the winter working at a ski hill in BC shredding the gnar! Her favourite activities include skiing, hiking and petting all dogs. Great Moment in Camping: “Experiencing every amazing sunrise and sunset while backpacking and canoeing.” Liz will be leading trips and working on site this summer. She has worked in camping for three years, and this is her second summer at Wanapitei.

 

Jacob Fischer

From Toronto, Ontario. Jacob is studying Philosophy at Trent University in Peterborough. His interests include musical theatre and cooking. Great Moment in Camping: “When I returned after my evac on my VII, seeing my group’s genuine excitement to see me return and realizing that they missed me as much as I missed all of them.” Jacob will be leading trips this summer. This is his 13th year at camp and his third year on staff.

From Toronto, Ontario. Residing in Halifax, Severen is currently studying Spanish and Latin American Studies at Dalhousie University with a minor in Contemporary Studies. Her favourite activities include walking, making lists, and cooking. Great Moment in Camping: “Paddling under the bridge after leading Bay Trip!” Severen will be leading trips this summer. This is her 12th year at camp and her 5th year on staff.

 

Gabriel Fischer-Schmidt

From Toronto Ontario. Gabe is currently studying Forestry at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. His favourite activities include becoming a better skier, hiking, paddling and watching the sun set. Great Moment in Camping: “Paddling under the Bridge after VII.  Sharing the experience with my 10 closest friends, while seeing my friends and family was surreal.” Gabe will be leading trips and working on site this summer. This is his 12th summer at camp and his 2nd year on staff.

 

JackJack Gardiner

From Aurora, Ontario.  Jack is studying Human Kinetics at the University of British Columbia: Okanagan Campus.  His favorite activities include playing running, hiking, and pretty much anything outdoors.  Great Moment in Camping: “Taking a nap while Sam read to us in the middle of the day on James Bay.”  Jack will be leading trips and working on site this summer.  This is his twelfth year at camp and his fourth year on staff.

From Richmond Hill, Ontario.  Her favourite activities include reading, yoga and snowboarding.  Great Moment in Camping: “My greatest moment in camping was one of the final days on V2 when we were paddling on the Arctic Ocean. It was a pretty windy day and we soon realized that the weather gods had blessed us with a tailwind, so we decided to open up a large camp tarp and use it as a massive sail across all the canoes. We sped along the ocean on this beautiful sunny day and pretended that we were pirates conquering the Arctic waters.”  Logan will be leading trips and working on site this summer.  This is her eighth year at camp and her fourth year on staff.

From Kingston, Ontario. Emma studied Child, Youth and Family Studies at the University of Guelph and has a Bachelor of Applied Science and her ECE. Her favourite activities include all things outdoorsy, NEATure walks, warm tea and reading Harry Potter, watercolour painting, early morning swims, singing and playing ukulele, travelling and cuddling her cat. Greatest Moment in Camping: “Last summer while leading WLIT, singing to Ellen’s guitar jams under the late August afterglow and rising crescent moon in Lady Evelyn. Warm oatmeal cookies wafting in the air- warm bellies, warm hearts- BLISS!” Emma will be joining us as Assistant Director this summer. This is her third year at Wanapitei.

 

Eamonn GoganEamonn Gogan

From Toronto, Ontario.  Eamonn is a graduate of the University of Guelph with a B.A.S. in Biochemistry and History and is currently finishing up his M.A. at McGill, where he studies History. Eamonn is an avid “collager” and enjoys spending his free time at camp in the arts and crafts building working on his next masterpiece.  Great Moment in Camping: “Paddling into Moosonee on my Bay Trip.” Eamonn will be leading trips this summer. This is his 8th year at camp and his 6th year on staff.

 

Henry GouldHenry Gould

From Toronto, Ontario. Henry is studying Engineering Physics at Queen’s University. His favourite activities include climbing, musical theatre, and adventuring. Great Moment in Camping: “Our second day on VII, we paddled around a point just east of Kugluktuk, Nunavut, only to find the bay packed with ice. We then spent two days paddling around and hopping from ice flow to ice flow, until the mouth of the Rae River.” Henry will be leading trips this summer. This is his 8th year at camp and his 5th year on staff.

 

Riley HeavensRiley Heavens

From Montreal, Quebec. Riley is studying Social Sciences at Dawson College.  Her favourite activities include painting and photography. Great Moment in Camping: “I was with a couple friends and we just laid on the grass and watched the stars for hours.” Riley will be leading trips and working on site this summer. This is her 4th summer at Wanapitei.

 

 

Alex HodginsAlex Hodgins

From Perth, Ontario. Alex just graduated Queen’s University where he studied Global Development. He has worked as a river guide in New Zealand, studied on exchange in Australia and volunteered with Canada World Youth in Indonesia, as well as traveled through Europe this fall. Greatest Moment in Camping: “At the start of every summer coming to the head of the Jack Pine trail feeling the breeze rising from Lake Temagami, seeing Mount Ferguson off in the distance and realizing that I am home.” Alex will be leading a VII trip this summer. This is his nineteenth year at camp and eighth year on staff.

FriedaFrieda Hodgins

From Perth, Ontario. Frieda is graduating this spring after studying Medical Sciences at Dalhousie University in Halifax. Her favorite activities include camping, climbing, painting, photography, volleyball and canoeing. Great Moment in Camping: “Finally reaching our downstream on VII when there was just enough water for us to sit on the deck plates of our canoes and push off shore on either side as we twisted down a little mountain stream remarkably fast.” Frieda will be leading trips this summer. This is her sixth year at camp and her fifth year on staff.

Morgan Hodgins

From Guelph, Ontario.  Morgan is finishing her last year of Nursing at the University of Ottawa.  Her favorite activities include outdoor sports, running, skiing, biking, climbing and swimming. Great Moment in Camping: “When I was 12 I went on a family canoe trip down the French River to our cottage just outside of Killarney on Georgian Bay. On our second last day we had to go around a very exposed section of land leaving us vulnerable to the wind and weather. We decided to wake up at 4am while the water was still calm to do this safely. By the time we were on the water the sun was just rising behind us shadowing us in its red light, while the water looked like glass. I still love getting up before sunrise because of the peace and calmness that we rarely experience while in the city.” Morgan will be leading VI this summer. This is her nineteenth year at camp and seventh year on staff.

Cori-Anne Huisman

From Fernie, British Columbia. Cori-Anne has an undergraduate degree in animal biology from the University of British Columbia. She has just finished her second year of veterinary school and hopes to be a wildlife veterinarian when she graduates. Next year she will be participating in her first veterinary surgery! Her favourite activities include playing hockey, volleyball, and travelling around the world. Great Moment in Camping: “Paddling down the Mountain River in the Northwest Territories and stopping at the site of an old landslide. The terrain looked like the moon with hardly any vegetation and a broad expanse of grey rocks. Our group hopped out on land and spent a few hours exploring the otherworldly landscape. As we crested a hill we saw a lone caribou standing majestically on the moon. That was one of those unique moments you can’t plan, they just happen when you’re out there together.” Cori-Anne will be leading VII this summer. This is her 20th summer at camp and her 7th year on staff.

Kim huismanKimberley Huisman

From Fernie, British Columbia. After two years at Concordia, Kimberley is about to take a gap year which includes a volunteer project in Belize. Her favorite activities include hockey – she has been playing since she was four years old, and for several years at the competitive level for both mens and womens teams. Great Moment in Camping: “On V2 when a group of about five of us decided to hike up the hill behind our campsite on the creek that was our upstream section. It was steep and for a while it seemed never ending but then all of a sudden we emerged above the treeline and the view was unbelievable. We could see the creek behind us that we had travelled up for the past week, as well as the lake that was our goal up ahead. It was also our first peek at the mountains all around us, which were incredible. It was so exciting and it really made us realize that all our hard work was definitely worth it and we could fully appreciate where we were headed and what we had done.” Kimberley will be leading trips this summer. This is her seventeenth year at camp and fifth year on staff.

 

Claire Hunter

From Toronto, Ontario. Claire is studying Immunology at McGill University. She enjoys playing guitar, skiing, and trying to dance. Greatest Moment in Camping: “Portaging on VII and coming face-to-face with a giant porcupine!” This is Claire’s eighth year at camp and first year on staff.

 

 

 

Sarah Irvine

From Toronto, Ontario. Sarah (also known as Pont) just finished her first year at Dalhousie University in Halifax where she studied Sustainability. Her favourite activities include baking, playing soccer, writing and travelling. Great Moment in Camping: “Collecting bones and antlers throughout VII and naming all of them Bev.” Sarah has been at Wanapitei for the past 11 years and this will be her first year on staff.

 

Sophie Karovitch

Born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. Sophie just finished her first year studying science at McGill University. She swam competitively for over a decade and proceeded to coach a competitive team. Sophie has also taken a real liking for sewing and knitting recently. Greatest Moment in Camping: “Leisurely floating down the Moisie river and having a small red squirrel swim up to my canoe and jump in!!! Terrifying in the moment, but absolutely hilarious to look back on!” Sophie has been at Wanapitei for 11 years and this will be her first year leading trips!

 

 

Máté Kovacsics

From Budapest, Hungary. Máté is studying to teach English and Hungarian Language and Literature at Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Budapest.  His favourite activities include reading, running and hiking. Máté will be working with campers and in our kitchen this summer. This is his 2nd year at Wanapitei.

 

 

Sam Liptay

From Burlington, Ontario. Sam graduated high school in 2019 and is planning on attending McGill in Fall 2020 for a B.A & Sc. after a gap year spent working and travelling. Canoe tripping brings together interests from all aspects of Sam’s life, such as cooking, playing music, reading, discussing politics and shenanigans with friends, into one especially fulfilling, meaningful experience. While having traveled in over 30 countries across the world, no experience has been as special to Sam as his trips canoeing through the Canadian wilderness. Great Camping Moment : “Nearly getting lost running through the barrens to get back to the campsite before dark, after hiking a ridge to watch the sunset over the expansive Nunavut tundra.” This will be Sam’s eleventh year at camp and first year on staff.

 

Clare Littlechild

From Toronto, Ontario. Clare just finished her first year of Global Justice in Political Science at Western and is an aspiring human rights lawyer. In her free time, she is an avid reader and hiker, and is preparing for the LSAT. Clare loves working on her family’s horse farm and playing polo! Greatest Camp Memory: “Singing to the soundtracks for Waitress and Hadestown with the rest of kitchen staff! Every day spent cooking was so much fun thanks to Em’s playlist.” This is Clare’s first year on staff.

From Vancouver, British Columbia.  Cameron is studying Biology at Queen’s University. His favorite activities include rugby, canoeing, rock climbing and biology.  Great Moment in Camping: “The last night on VII, going swimming in the Arctic Ocean and enjoying my final hours at the edge of the world.” Cameron will be leading trips and working on site this summer.  This is his twelfth year at camp and third year on staff.

 

Ella MacPhail

From Kingston, Ontario. Ella is working on her Bachelor of Science at Dalhousie University. Her interests include hiking, gymnastics, going on adventures with friends, and her dogs. Great Moment in Camping “Finishing our second overland on VII and finally reaching the start of the paddling on the push me pull you river where the water was a brilliant turquoise and completely clear; it felt like we were floating on air!”. This will be Ella’s ninth summer at camp and first year on staff.

From Toronto, Ontario. Kai spent his fall and winter working as a scaffolder in Toronto, and spent his spare time in the spring developing a local rock climbing area and white water kayaking around Quebec, improving his paddling skills and competing in races against some of the best in the world. His favorite activities include rugby, rock climbing, hockey, sailing, white water kayaking and travel.  Great Moment in Camping: “Every year at Wanapitei has made me fall deeper in love with camping and paddling, and I’m always grateful for the time spent outdoors with this wonderful community.” Kai will be leading trips and working on site this summer.  This is his ninth year at camp and his third year on staff.

Hannah Magowan

From Melrose, Scotland. Hannah is studying Chemistry with Teaching at Strathclyde University in Glasgow. Her favourite activities include dance and netball, but can’t wait to be canoeing again in summer. Great Moment in Camping: “Connecting canoes together, creating some “sails” , and catching some wind to sail into our campsite for the evening.  Also, paddling under the bridge for the first time with my group was such an amazing experience!” Hannah will be returning to work at Wanapitei for the 2nd time this summer as a canoe tripping leader.

  OwenOwen Melanson

Owen was born in Ottawa, Ontario and has lived internationally in Italy, Costa Rica and Barbados.  Owen has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and has completed his Cambridge English Language Teaching for Adults (CELTA) certification. He is taking courses at the University of Guelph with the goal of attending teacher’s college in the future. He helped organize and set the Guiness World Record for highest altitude hockey game played (14,400 ft.) in the Greater Himalayan mountain range.  Great Moment in Camping: “Sleeping at the base of the highest active volcano in the world in Cotopaxi, Ecuador. We watched as the sunlight left the mountain range and the stars appeared in the cloudless sky. The next morning, I unzipped the tent flap to watch the volcano catch the first light of sunrise.”  Owen will be leading trips this summer.  This is Owen’s ninth year at camp and seventh year on staff.

 

Hana Morgan

Born in Toronto, Ontario. Hana Graduated from Parkdale Collegiate and is planning to go to Dalhousie University this fall. During her gap year, Hana has travelled throughout Europe while au pairing in Italy! Some of her favourite activities include running, swimming and painting. Greatest Moment in Camping “Seeing the northern lights for the first time along the Winisk River.” This will be her second year at Wanapitei and first on staff.

 Maria Page

From York, United Kingdom and Kenya.  Maria is studying for a degree in Chemistry in the UK.  Her favourite activities include running, rock climbing and spending time outdoors.  Great Moment in Camping: “In Kenya, when elephants walked straight through our campsite; it was a special moment and made me appreciate how lucky I am to have lived in such an incredible journey.” Maria will be leading trips and working on site this summer.  This is her second year at Wanapitei.

From Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.  Jack will be starting his second year at Carleton University this fall.  His favourite activity is cross-country skiing. Great Moment in Camping: “Seeing a polar bear from a helicopter on the last day of VII.” Jack will be leading trips and working on site this summer.  This is his 5th year at Wanapitei and 2nd year on staff.

 

 

Laura Peberdy

From Erin, Ontario. Laura is studying Global Health, Immunology and Contemporary Asian Studies at the University of Toronto.  Her favourite activities include embroidery, knitting and cycling.  Great Moment in Camping: “On VI, we had a very long day and got to the campsite late.  Kai and Tess (my leaders) made us some very tasty potato soup.  As we finished eating it, we saw the Northern Lights.” Laura will be leading trips and working on site this summer.  This is her sixth year at Wanapitei and her second year on staff.

 

Sasha Pickering

From the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia.  She enjoys art galleries, live music, good coffee and being in the woods. Great Moment in Camping: “I can’t say I have one. When I think about camping, I think about the little things I love. Waking up to sunshine, listening to the pelting of rain on the tent, blissful silences in the canoe and looking for moose in a swamp.” Sasha will be leading VII this summer.  This is her eleventh year at camp and her seventh on staff.

 

Ethan Rajaratnam

From Toronto, Ontario.  Ethan is studying Medical Sciences at Western University.  His favourite activities include running, hiking, soccer and reading.  Great Moment in Camping: “About a week into VII, we were supposed to portage through some pretty dense alders, so two of my friends and I started clearing a path with our large knives.  We barely got anywhere, after a few hours and ended up taking a helicopter over our overland, but it was a lot of fun!” Ethan will be leading trips this summer. This is his 7th summer at Wanapitei and his 2nd year on staff.

Gabriel Riendeau

From Ottawa, Ontario. Gab spent the past Fall traveling in Europe and is hoping to study landscape architecture at the University of Guelph beginning next Fall. His favourite activities include jumping on a trampoline, playing the guitar, rock climbing, and anything else outdoors. Greatest moment in camping: “On VII, after 26 days of portaging, arriving at the mouth of the Fraser River valley in Labrador. The clouds parted after two weeks of overcast weather. Getting to take in the view with my nine best friends was pretty amazing.”  Gab will be leading trips and working on staff this summer. This is his 6th year at Wanapitei and his 1st year on staff.

BernardBernard Rechico-Moisan

From Ottawa, Ontario.  Bernard is currently living in Kamloops, BC ,studying Tourism Management at  Thompson Rivers University. His favorite activities include climbing, skiing, and anything else outdoors.  Great Moment in Camping: “On V2, we had a 5-kilometer portage in between these two mountains. We had been lake hopping for a few days now so we were pretty tired and this was our last big portage. When we got to the top of this pass, the sun was setting and we could see all the way to the Coppermine. After all the hard work we had done, reaching that lookout felt like such a big accomplishment. It’s these kinds of things that make the trip great.”  Bernard will be leading trips and working on site this summer. This is his thirteenth year at camp and sith year on staff.

From Ottawa, Ontario.  Alex is studying Architectural Engineering at Carleton University.  His favourite activities include reading, skiing and drawing unusual buildings.  Great Moment in Camping: “That would have to be the first few days of VII. We had a brief ocean paddle between Kugluktuk and the mouth of the Rae, and most of it had become packed with drift ice. The adventure of working and dragging the canoes across a sea of ice floes made for an unforgettable experience.”  Alex will be working on site this summer.  This is his 12th year at camp and his fourth year on staff.

BrigidBrigid Roeder

From Ottawa, Ontario. Brigid is working on her Bachelor of Education at McGill University. Her favourite activities include playing guitar, watching hockey, and learning new things. Great Moment in Camping: “A crappy, dreary, rainy day, a brutal, muddy portage, and some campers who just started having a hoot playing in the mud! A great reminder to appreciate the moment, and of why we do this.” Brigid will be leading trips and working on site this summer. This is her 5th year at Wanapitei and her 4th year on staff.

 

Anna Szelényi

From Budapest, Hungary. Anna is studying to be a teacher, focusing on English and Hungarian. Her favourite activities include exploring nature, yoga, running and cooking.  She is also interested in languages and is currently learning Portuguese. Great Moment in Camping: “The excitement and joy on camper’s faces on a beautiful, sunny and clear day when they just get the true nature of sailing and have fun together.” Anna will be running our sailing program this summer. This is her 2nd year at Wanapitei.

 

Ella Taylor

From Toronto, Ontario. Ella is now studying Curation and Criticism at OCAD University. She loves drawing, rock climbing, and anything outside. She has been hiking and camping for most of her life in various parks around Canada. Great Moment in Camping: “Approaching the Fraser Valley in Labrador after several weeks of portaging only to find out that it was dry!” Ella has been tripping with Wanapitei for seven years as a camper and is very excited to lead the trips this summer!

 

 

Mark Teron

From Toronto, Ontario. Mark is currently studying Mechanical Engineering at McGill University in Montreal. His interests include skateboarding, snowboarding, running, rock climbing, photography, music, fast cars (or at least fun ones) and, of course, all things outdoors and adventurous. Great Moment in Camping: “It has to be a tie between catching air while rolling down a 100ft sandy bluff on VI or dunking in a natural (and incredibly slimy) hot spring to finish off VII.” This is Mark’s 1st year on staff, and has been canoe tripping and camping for over a decade. 

Lucas WhitearLucas Whitear

From Scarborough, Ontario.  Lucas is studying to be an HVAC Technician at George Brown College in Toronto. His favourite activities include playing rugby, paddling, camping and being up at the cottage. Great Moment in Camping: “On my V2 when my group did the Dubawnt Canyon portage. It was super long and the buggiest place ever but it was such a spectacular view that none of it mattered. Once we got to the half way mark we all through off our bug jackets and took a ton photos with the crazy canyon in the background”.  Lucas will be leading trips and working on site this summer. This is his tenth summer at camp and his third year on staff.

Alex Wolf

Originally from Toronto, Ontario. Alex, commonly known as “Athabasca” at camp, now lives in Montreal and attends McGill University. He is finishing up his first year and plans on majoring in Applied Mathematics. His interests include playing piano, teaching skiing, canoeing (obviously), and competing as a pole vaulter on the McGill Track Team. Greatest Moment in Camping: “It was either spending last summer on VII with 9 of my best friends or having pizza boated from camp to the campsite for dinner on his first Junior trip.” This is Alex’s 11th year at Wanapitei and 1st year on staff.

EmmersonEmmerson Wilson

From Ottawa, Ontario. Emmerson is graduating with Honours in Biology and a minor in Economics from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. Her favourite activities include canoe tripping, cooking, playing guitar, hammocking and spending time outside. Great Moment in Camping: “One of my great moments in camping has to be waking up to snow on my birthday (July 20th) on trip in 2016. It was super cold, but also an awesome gift from nature.” Emmerson will be leading trips and working on site this summer. This is her 12th summer at camp and 4th year on staff.

From Nelson, British Columbia.  Cian aspires to attend the Emily Carr School of Art and Design.  His favourite activities include rugby, sailing, canoeing, snowboarding, hiking and all forms of art.  Great Moment in Camping: “On my V2 after a particularly hard day, my fellow campers and I, when we got to our campsite, started just running around this island we were camping on. for no reason whatsoever, we just ran with caribou antlers we had found earlier that week. It was such a pure moment that was pointless but so important.” Cian will be leading trips and working on site this summer. This is his sixth year at Wanapitei and first year on staff.
